Sexual Orientation and Gender

A person’s gender and sex identification is one of the largest parts of who they are. Most individuals grow up in a world with gender and sex norms pushed on them from a very young age without providing other experiences or options. This can become frustrating, confusing and painful for individuals who feel and know that those norms don’t fit for them and experience a world that tells you how you should look, act, and even feel. It can lead to self isolation, shame, intrusive thoughts, self harm, feelings of and actual abandonment and sometimes homelessness.

A therapeutic space can be helpful when trying to access support around internal or external struggles that an individual may be facing regarding one’s gender identity, sexual orientation or romantic world. This also includes trying to navigate the social and societal pressures and expectations that can become difficult. If these topics have become a struggle for you, having a safe space to process it can be essential to mental and emotional well-being. Therapy can help you overcome the mental/emotional struggles, gain more self-esteem and give you tools to manage difficult situations.

At Over the Hill with Gill, I will walk alongside you in your journey towards living a happy and authentic life. I understand that an individual’s gender/sexual identity and expression can be extremely personal and uniquely theirs and I will work hard to protect that. This means that my therapy style is very versatile and can be tailored to meet the unique needs of the individual no matter what stage you may be in. I will work my hardest to assist you in dealing with the unfortunate impact of living in an often cissexist, uninformed, and transphobic environment. At Over the Hill with Gill, I strive to create an inclusive, supportive space to work with you in exploring your gender and sexual identity and some of the struggles that may come along with this.
